Very Sanderson: 150 years of English decoration

New exhibition at the FTM 19th March – 13th June 2010

The Fashion and Textile Museum is pleased to announce details of its collaboration with Sanderson - one of the world’s most innovative and pioneering fabrics and furnishings companies - as it celebrates its 150th
anniversary in 2010.

The work of this most quintessentially English company will be showcased in a new exhibition which runs from 19th March – 13thJune 2010 and will take visitors on a tour de force of 150 years of English decoration.

When Arthur Sanderson set up his business in 1860 as an importer of French
wallpapers he could scarcely have imagined that a century later it would have
grown into a company with a landmark London showroom serving an
international market. One hundred and fifty years since it started Sanderson is
still going strong today.

However, the exhibition charts not just the Sanderson story, but the social history
of a country reflected through domestic furnishings and the changing social
mores of society.

For example, Sanderson was a beneficiary of the building boom in Britain in the
1880s that led to greater demand for affordable wallpaper and the company
was quick to take advantage of this by expanding its range of machine-printed
papers. Adapting to new trends has been a key theme throughout Sanderson’s
history and is central to its longevity, as is its expansion into printed textiles and
other decorative items.

The exhibition is staged by the Fashion and Textile Museum and runs from the
19th March 2010 until the 13th June 2010

Exhibition opening times are Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 6pm. Last admission
5.15pm.

Ticket prices are £6.50 for adults, £3.50 for students and concessions, free entry
for under 12s

Discover Sweetling at the East London Design Show and Clothes Show Live

Miss Dolly will be presenting the Sweetling collection at the East London Design Show (3rd – 6th December 2009) and also at Clothes Show Live (4th – 9th December 2009) – don’t miss these fabulous opportunities to pick up the perfect gift for your teen daughter this Christmas!

Sweetling first bras are a unique product in the market place. Sweetling bras are a fun and celebratory product and purchasing a Sweetling bra is a special moment to be shared by mothers and daughters.

Each bra is designed and made in the UK from soft, 100% cotton in retro-inspired, designer fabrics. The designs work with and promote the natural shape of each young girl’s unique silhouette. Each bra is specifically designed to support young girls rapidly changing breasts during this important stage of their development.

Available to buy on line at http://www.sweetling.co.uk/, Miss Dolly Sweetling (a unique 1930s mannequin) is the junior house model for the brand and she introduces the collection on the website in a fun and appealing way to young girls.

Miss Sophie and Miss Maria – the names behind the brand - created Sweetling because they couldn't find any stylish, natural fabric bras for their own daughters, which offer an alternative to the synthetic moulded, underwired bras that are being pushed towards young girls.

GeeGee the new luxury designer womenswear brand launches

GeeGee - a new high-end designer womenswear brand - has just been launched by fashion entrepreneur Rebecca Agouropoulos. Rebecca has established the new brand in response to an identified need for gorgeous, high-quality, wearable garments for the Generation X female. The first collection will be available to stockists from December 2009 and, as an almost unique aspect of the collections these days, every single piece is made in England.

GeeGee encapsulates the urban zeitgeist but with a glorious twist – subtle referencing to a variety of country themes. The collections, delicately influenced by country pursuits yet embodying ‘on trend’ designs, comprise desirable pieces that can be added to every woman’s wardrobe yet have wearability, longevity and represent value for money in the mid-luxury market.

The GeeGee brand incorporates traditional soft British tailoring in high quality fabrics with key looks including beautiful jackets, unique gillets, softly-tailored shirts and cord ‘jodphur-style’ and stretch leather leggings - all covetable pieces with long life potential for a wardrobe. As for country referencing, there is nothing ‘in your face’ about GeeGee. The styling is extremely low-key – just enough is said by the designers to imply a subtle chic born of the rustic.

Rebecca is currently working with her designers to create the AW10 collection and she is determined that the brand will support British manufacturing, without compromise. Having spent months researching British manufacturing, she feels that “The big difference between what can be done in factories in this country and what is often to be seen in the products made abroad is the level of quality. This comes about for at least two reasons – the standards of workmanship that are achieved regularly are just higher in the UK and when the guys working on the shop floor are just around the corner, it is so much easier to fine tune your manufacturing requirements.” There are other advantages to be had too, by keeping it all in the home market. For the UK retailers, if stock starts to run out sooner than expected they can reorder and have fresh garments in store much sooner so it all equates to short, fast and reliable turn around. There are also spin-off environmental benefits by reducing the carbon foot print.

A unique, collectable autograph to evidence support of UK manufacturing will be added to each piece in the collection, through a handmade signature label signed by Rebecca stating that the pieces are ‘Proudly Made in England’.

GeeGee is the brand to watch. Stockists are already eagerly anticipating the new collection, which will have a great appeal to those of their customers who are looking for high quality, British manufactured and designed, wearable and desirable garments.
